The Suffolk coast is an amazing place to live and visit. It’s also a fantastic home for nature. Some nature is easy to spot: herring gulls stealing your chips, rabbits munching on grass along the road verges or wasps that seem to be drawn to ice cream like magnets.
This summer, why not pause for a few minutes and look a little closer. You’ll be amazed at how much nature is all around you, even in your garden: beautiful butterflies flitting from flower to flower; bees busily searching for pollen, spiders spinning their intricate webs, maybe even a hedgehog snuffling across the lawn at night.
Over the weekend of 9th to 11th August we’d like you to experience nature in a new way by taking part in the RSPB Big Wild Sleepout. You could camp in the garden or even sleep under the stars, or perhaps you’d like to join in a unique chance to camp on a RSPB nature reserve. There will be camping at Minsmere on Friday 9th August and Havergate Island on Saturday 10th August. Places are limited, so contact RSPB Minsmere now to reserve your place.
If night time nature discovery doesn’t appeal to you then a visit to Minsmere is the perfect way to explore a home for all sorts of nature: flowers, insects, mammals and reptiles as well as birds and beautiful landscapes. The volunteer guides are always happy to help, or you could join a guided walk.
Families can enjoy the Wild Zone, complete with den building, child-sized sand martin tunnels and a migration maze. There’s also some great Explorer backpacks to borrow, containing binoculars and a bird bingo checklist.
Throughout the school holidays there is a variety of additional activities for families to enjoy, including pond dipping, owl pellet dissection, bird ringing demonstrations and introductory guided walks. Check the website for further details.
Entry to Minsmere is free for RSPB members. There’s a charge for non-members. The visitor centre, shop and cafe are open 9am to 5pm daily, with the countryside walks remaining open from dawn to dusk. For further details see www.rspb.org.uk/minsmere or call 01728 648281.
