Pop-up artists’ shop in Tower Ramparts

An artists’ pop-up shop will open on Saturday to give a unique boost to Ipswich’s Tower Ramparts Shopping centre.

The shop is being launched by Ipswich Borough Council in partnership with Eastern Enterprise Hub, I Make Fun Stuff and Tower Ramparts as part of the Ipswich Recreate project.

It’s a true partnership – the Council has supplied funding, the Eastern Enterprise Hub the training, Tower Ramparts is charging a peppercorn rent and I Make Fun Stuff is providing the artistic know-how.

Mike Sorhaindo, from Tower Ramparts, said: “It is great to be able to support a local scheme that looks at stimulating the start-up of retail businesses. This kind of scheme also adds to the offer of the centre and will help increase footfall in the area.”

Cathy Frost, from I Make Fun Stuff, added: “When we were approached to open the pop-up shop we jumped at the chance. We knew we would have a wealth of excellent products we could use to stock the shop from the amazing artists and designers who take stalls at the markets it was just a matter of making the space how we envisioned. We have carefully selected products and artwork to fill the shop to ensure that we offer a unique experience and make a success of the project for ourselves and the Recreate project who have so kindly given us the opportunity.”

The Pop Up shop will also be a point of reference for any budding entrepreneurs. The Recreate project has brought together art and business in one location, the shop can provide not just exposure for small creative businesses but also provide valuable retail experience through a volunteer programme. There will also be retail workshops offered in partnership with the Eastern Enterprise hub to support creative start-ups.

Chris Shutt, Head of Business Incubation and Innovations at the Eastern Enterprise Hub said “The pop up shop is a boost to Ipswich’s retail offer and is a great place for local creatives to sell to local people.” Councillor Carole Jones, Economic Development Portfolio-holder at Ipswich Borough Council says “It is great to bring so many partners together to provide something different and exciting to boost the shopping centre and the town.”
