Plans to give Ipswich’s Tower Ramparts Shopping Centre a £4m re-vamp to attract new stores to the town are being unveiled to the public this week.
Drawing on the town’s maritime heritage, Tower Ramparts Shopping Centre is being renamed Sailmakers as part of plans about to be submitted.
The shopping centre refurbishment plans align perfectly with the vision for Ipswich as East Anglia’s Waterfront town and the priorities of the recently formed Greater Ipswich Partnership; a visionary partnership between New Anglia LEP, University Campus Suffolk, Ipswich Chamber of Commerce, Suffolk County Council, Ipswich Borough Council and Ipswich Central.
The £4m investment will see new entrances based on the historic Thames barges that once sailed along the River Gipping, a major internal refurbishment and new toilet facilities, along with new shop fascias over the coming year.
A public exhibition about the centre’s new look, name change, and future plans opens at Tower Ramparts on Friday 25 July. The public consultation room will be at unit 4 next to Baldwins within the Tower Ramparts Shopping Centre.
Terry Baxter, Chair of Ipswich Central has said “the reinvigoration of the scheme brings million of pounds of investment to Ipswich’s retail core and will act as a magnet for new retail names. I welcome the change of name as this reinforces the Greater Ipswich Partnership’s vision of Ipswich as East Anglia’s Waterfront Town.”
