Suffolk marks National HIV Testing Week with mobile testing sessions

HIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust is to mark the third annual National HIV Testing Week (22nd – 30th November) by offering rapid HIV tests from a number of locations across Suffolk.

National HIV Testing Week was established by Terrence Higgins Trust and HIV Prevention England in 2012, in a bid to reduce high levels of undiagnosed and late-diagnosed HIV in England. In 2012, there were an estimated 3,871 people living with HIV in Anglia and Essex, one in five of whom remain undiagnosed and therefore more likely to pass the virus on unwittingly.

Throughout National HIV Testing Week, Terrence Higgins Trust’s Suffolk team will be taking their HIV testing service on the road, with a number of mobile sessions planned at venues across the county:

Monday 24th November (2pm – 4pm): Lloyds Pharmacy, High St, Leiston
Monday 24th November (4pm – 8pm): Terrence Higgins Trust, Arcade St, Ipswich
Tuesday 25th November (10am – 12pm): Co-op Pharmacy, Mill Rd, Haverhill
Thursday 27th November (6pm – 8pm): ASDA Pharmacy, Wilks Way, Stowmarket
Thursday 27th November (5pm – 7pm): Superdrug, Cornhill, Bury St Edmunds

Testing is free and confidential, and involves a finger-prick blood test, with results available within 15 minutes. Those attending the mobile sessions will be given information and support before and after the test, and anyone who tests positive will be referred quickly to a specialist clinic.

Rachael Toner, Centre Manager for Terrence Higgins Trust in Suffolk, said: “National HIV Testing Week gives us a great opportunity to draw attention to how quick and easy modern tests are. That’s why this year we’re thrilled to be taking our testing service out into the community. There are far more reasons to know your HIV status than there are not to, so if it’s been a while since your last test, please come along to one of our mobile sessions or contact the team to make an appointment at a time that suits you.”
