Ipswich Red Cross Team bounce back

The Ipswich Red Cross office at Chevallier Street has endured two disasters in the last 12 months. In September 2014 an arsonist set fire to the building, gutting it completely, and within a year thieves deliberately targeted the re-equipped premises, breaking in on the night of 10 July to steal all the equipment and the contents of the safe. But the Red Cross team, which works tirelessly to help the local community cope with crisis, is refusing to let these crises of their own stop them from supporting vulnerable people.

The centre was completely ruined by the fire and smoke damage last year and had to be refurbished. Then last month, thieves made off with all the computers, phones and other essential equipment. “They even broke into our safe and took our cash tins,” said Mark. “They contained kind-hearted people’s donations to our cause. It’s hard to fathom how people could target us when everything we do is to help vulnerable people – we’ve had to work hard to make sure that those we support don’t suffer while we replace all our systems and gear.”

The Red Cross is now looking for people of any age (18+) and background from the Ipswich area who might have a bit of spare time to dedicate to volunteering. There are plenty of voluntary roles available in the independent living, emergency response and event first aid teams.
