Suffolk Coastal has unveiled its plans to revamp the area around Felixstowe’s derelict boating lake.
The Council has submitted a planning application, which is currently out for consultation, to use the seafront site to create additional car parking, a grassed open area and a multi-purpose open area for outdoor events.
The plans, which were agreed by Suffolk Coastal’s Cabinet in October, mean clearing the site, which houses the disused boating lake and go kart track, to the south west of Felixstowe Leisure Centre which neighbours on to the pay and display car park on Sea Road.
Suffolk Coastal’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Customers, Communities and Leisure, Cllr TJ Haworth-Culf, said: “This area has been derelict for some years. However, we have not been able to take action, because we had planned to use the site as the compound to support the work to renovate the pier.”
“The decision has now been made that this compound will be on the other side of the leisure centre, where it will provide easier access to the pier site. So we have moved to clear the site and create a facility for the community.”
“Felixstowe is seeing a growth in visitor numbers, so we need to make sure there is plenty of seafront parking to encourage this growth in tourism. We also want to have a flexible open area to be used for events like Christmas markets, exhibitions and fair.”
