Custom House open to public

ABP’s Port of Ipswich will once again open the doors to Old Custom House this Saturday, 6 August, giving members of the public a rare opportunity to see inside the historic building.

This is only the second time ABP has opened Old Custom House, with the Ipswich Maritime Trust and Apostleship of the Sea hosting exhibitions as part of the Ipswich Waterfront Celebration.

Divisional Port Manager Paul Ager said: “This building has a long and detailed history, so it is important that the community have a chance to see inside and learn about its past.

“Last year we had over 3,500 people walk through Old Custom House, all eager to learn about the history of the building and the port. We hope to see just as many people, if not more, visiting Old Custom House on Saturday and celebrating Ipswich as a historic port town here at the Wet Dock.”

ABP’s Ipswich Haven Marina will also be participating in the Ipswich Waterfront Celebration, hosting their annual summertime event with activities for the whole family all weekend.

Old Custom House is a Grade II listed building which was opened in 1844. Today it serves as the offices for the Port of Ipswich. ABP recently carried out extensive works to re-roof the clock tower, investing over £150,000 in the project over the last two years.
