The Suffolk Workplace Games

On Friday 9th September, twenty one teams from across seventeen different workplaces in Suffolk took part in the third annual Suffolk Workplace Games event, held at Ipswich School Sports Centre, with over 200 business individuals participating in a fun day of sporting activities away from the office. This year’s event was kindly sponsored by Philips AVENT who presented the award to the overall Workplace Games champions.

The Suffolk Workplace Games is a key annual event for Suffolk Sport reaching out to businesses to get active and is part of the national Workplace Challenge initiative, backed by Sport England and the British Heart Foundation, seeking to inspire businesses and encourage workers to get active in and around the working day.

wpg-archeryWorkers spend up to 60% of their waking hours at work and an estimated 40% of people do not exercise enough, according to Public Health England. This has ramifications on businesses with increased levels of staff absence and lower levels of productivity due to 140 million working days lost to sickness each year costing UK businesses £14billion.

The importance of workplace health and wellbeing has been illustrated in the number of teams that signed up for the event, selling out back in May of this year.

Businesses at the event included Abbeycroft Leisure, Ashton’s Legal, AXA Insurance, Babergh & Mid Suffolk District Council, two BT teams, Fleximize, Natwest, event sponsors Philips AVENT, Places for People Leisure, Premier Education Group, Prettys, Sanofi, Scrutton Bland, Sentinel Leisure, Siemens and two South Suffolk Leisure teams.

Susannah Challis, Partnership Development Officer and Suffolk Workplace Games organiser at Suffolk Sport added “It was fantastic to see this popular event double in size since it began in 2014, enabling more businesses and individuals to take part. The hot topic and influence of sport this summer has been the Rio Olympics which has showcased and inspired people to take up an activity and perhaps a sport that they haven’t taken part in since school. The Workplace Games event has given people a taster of a whole host of sports and has been a real team event. This was seen in the team spirit and camaraderie of co-workers and a fun competitive atmosphere between Suffolk businesses at the event.”

Companies and individuals alike can get active and get involved in the Workplace Challenge, taking part in activities, competitions and events across Suffolk, logging their activity levels online or via an app. For further information and to sign up for FREE visit www.workplacechallenge.org.uk/suffolk
