FREE summer sport for Ipswich youngsters

More than 20,000 children in Ipswich can apply for a FREE summer iCard to allow them to enjoy a range of sporting activities over the long school holiday.

The pledge to ensure that youngsters in the town have more to do was made by Borough Council Leader David Ellesmere at a community meeting in south-east Ipswich.

At that meeting, the second held since the killing of teenager Tavis Spencer-Aitkens, residents called on the Council to make more activities available during the school summer break.

Councillor Ellesmere responded by pledging to make free iCards available to children between the ages of five and 16, not only in south-east Ipswich but throughout the town.

The iCards will allow any one of that age attending a state school in the town to enjoy free swimming, racquet sports and everything from fitness sessions to roller-skating at the Council’s sports centres.

Leaflets are being sent to every pupil via their schools, giving details of how their parents or carers can apply online and then collect from their local sports centre or Crown Pools. The programme starts from 30th July and full details of the summer’s activities will be included in the information pack.

Councillor Ellesmere said: “Following the tragic events in south-east Ipswich we have attended two meetings to hear what local people want to help improve their community. One request was for free access to sports activities over the summer and this is why we are making more than 20,000 junior iCards available right across the town. This is in addition to our extended free Jumpers for Goalposts community sports offer in local parks.”
If your child has not brought home a leaflet please go to www.ipswichfit.co.uk /summerholidayicard to apply.
