Review: Macbeth, Mercury Theatre, Colchester

Most people are familiar with William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Macbeth. It’s the piece that many of us learnt at school and probably one of his most famous works.

A tale of political ambition, corruption and murder, Macbeth is not for the faint hearted and this production of ‘The Scottish Play’ at the Mercury Theatre, Colchester was jam packed with dramatic scenes.

Shakespeare wrote Macbeth in the early 1600s, however this performance proves that his work is timeless, the modern twist portrayed on stage brought this classic bang up to date, with clever staging, modern costumes and the imaginative use of the traps.

A very strong cast brought this Shakespeare classic to life beautifully. A special mention to Stuart Laing who brilliantly cast to play Macbeth and the on stage chemistry with Esther Hall as Lady Macbeth was outstanding.

Fast paced and gripping from the first act, this production had the audience hooked from the start, added to that some very inventive special lighting effects, made for a thoroughly enjoyable visit to the theatre.

Macbeth is at the Mercury Theatre, Colchester until Saturday 18th October, to book tickets visit www.mercurytheatre.co.uk or call the Box Office on 01206 573948.
