Charles Dickens Walk of Ipswich

A special guided walk will highlight Ipswich’s connections with the great English Writer Charles Dickens on the anniversary of his birth 200 years ago.

Ipswich Tourist Guides, and the Tourist Information Centre, have arranged a special Guided Walk to commemorate Charles Dickens connections with Ipswich. The walk will take place on Tuesday 7th February – the 200th anniversary of the birth of the great writer. There is a choice of times offered for the walk which commences at the Tourist Information Centre – 2.00pm plus an evening walk at 7.00pm so even people with day time commitments need not miss out.

Both the walks will end up at Arlingtons restaurant in the town for some light refreshments where, as an extra feature, the Guide will read a short selection of readings from Dickens works which particularly relate to Ipswich.

The cost is just £6.00 per walk per person, which includes refreshments and the reading.

Dickens visited Ipswich on a number of occasions as a young reporter and featured the town, and recognisable characters and buildings, in his writings and novels such as “Pickwick Papers” and “David Copperfield”. He also spent a well documented holiday here (arriving via the river on a steamer) and visited the town on his book and reading tours.

Further details about the guided walks, and bookings, are available from Ipswich Tourist Information Centre, telephone 01473, 258070, email tourist@ipswich.gov.uk
