Building on the success of the last 25 years of free live Big Screen broadcasts, the Royal Opera House is delighted to announce this summer’s BP Summer Big Screen performance of The Royal Opera’s La bohème. Ipswich residents and visitors can watch this world-class production of opera on Thursday 17th May at 7.30pm at Christchurch Park when it will be beamed live from Covent Garden.

The Royal Opera House first screened a live performance on a Big Screen in Covent Garden Piazza 1987. From those humble beginnings, where hundreds of people came to see Plácido Domingo perform in La bohème, it is fitting that 25 years later we celebrate with the return of this most famous of operas.

Whether audiences are new to opera or already devotees, the BP Summer Big Screen relays offer a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the very best from the Royal Opera House. The screening will also include exclusive backstage footage and live audience interaction.

Opera’s greatest love story, La bohème, returns in this beautifully detailed traditional production starring Celine Byrne and Joseph Calleja under the baton of Semyon Bychkov. Perfect for new opera audiences the free BP Summer Big Screen live relay of Puccini’s La bohème, the story of a struggling poet whose life changes forever after meeting a beautiful fragile young woman is the ideal place to start.

Des Violaris, BP’s UK Director for Arts and Culture, said, “This is a unique opportunity to connect people and communities across the UK by bringing opera and ballet performances live from the Royal Opera House into the lives of people who may not normally have an opportunity go to experience the very best in these art forms.”

• Christchurch Park Ipswich, Thursday 17 May at 7.30pm.
