Museum News... What's Happening at Colchester and Ipswich Museums

Colchester and Ipswich Museum service would like to put out an appeal for members of the public to come forward with any objects or stories for their planned exhibition celebrating Black History month 2008.

This exhibition is about people and will be created out of the public’s response to the appeal. The appeal aims to capture new historical information which will compliment existing museum collections and archives which will bring this part of Colchester’s History alive in Hollytrees Museum Colchester.

The National Health Service celebrates its 60th Anniversary this year and Hollytrees Museum Colchester will be hosting a small exhibition about the lives and stories of medical staff who came to Colchester to work for the NHS, recruited from other countries throughout the commonwealth. This display will open in October for Black History Month.

Following the Second World War there was a huge shortage of medical staff in the UK and the NHS began actively recruiting from Europe, Africa, West Indies, India and China. Colchester’s hospitals became a centre for new nurses from overseas with some of them settling in Colchester and the surrounding area.

This project will collect stories of the doctors and nurses who came to Colchester to work in the local hospitals. We are keen to collect any objects and stories, either historical or more recent, which can help to tell the story of this fascinating aspect of local history.

So far I have been in contact with a lady called Shirla Philogene who has just finished her autobiography. She trained as a nurse at Colchester General Hospital in 1958 having come from St Vincents in the Caribbean. She now lives in London and I will be doing an oral history interview with her on August 14th.

Anybody with a story objects etc who would like to help us create content for this exhibition please contact

Empire of Care @ Hollytrees Museum, Colchester
October 29th 2008 to March 1st 2009

The National Health Service celebrates its 60th Anniversary this year and Hollytrees Museum will be hosting an exhibition about the lives and stories of the nurses who came to Colchester to work for the NHS, recruited from other countries throughout the Commonwealth Empire.

Following the Second World War there was a huge shortage of medical staff in the UK and the NHS began actively recruiting from Europe, Africa, West Indies, Malaysia and China. Colchester’s hospitals became a centre for new nurses from overseas with some of them choosing to settle in Colchester and the surrounding area.

This fascinating exhibition displays objects, stories, photographs and press cuttings to bring the story of Colchester’s overseas nurses to life. Insightful interviews capture the pioneering spirit of these trainee nurses; their journeys, experiences, the uniforms and the friends they met along the way.

This exhibition can be enjoyed free of charge in the beautiful surroundings of Hollytrees Museum.
