Little Shop of Horrors – New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich
little shop of horros ipswich's new wolsey
• James Haggie & Shirley Darroch

Fantastically funny, Little Shop of Horrors has you laughing from the start. The talented cast take you on a journey though some toe tapping 1950’s style numbers telling the story of a failing florist shop that turns it’s fortunes around with the discovery of an unusual plant by a floral assistant. Visitors flock to see Audrey II whose secret taste for human blood makes her increasingly demanding on Seymour, her owner. Audrey II’s nightly cries of “Feed me” makes Seymour commit murder and deceit in order to satisfy the creature’s hungry appetite.

Jo Serui as the voice of Audrey II is just wonderful and combined with the manipulation skills of Dominic Eddington really brings the plant to life. James Haggie’s portrayal of Seymour shows some fine acting along with the vulnerability you would expect from the character. Seymour’s love interest Audrey, Shirley Darroch brings that something special to the show, you hear her talk of her dreams for a match box house and a land that’s green and then you feel her pain as she settles for a pig of a boyfriend.

• Shirley Darroch, Nick Haverson & James Haggie.

The loudest laughs from the audience were reserved for Nick Haverson whose suburb portrayal of sadistic dentist Orin was just outstanding. From the moment we were introduced to him and his bullying ways, to his untimely end as plant food, he was just brilliant.

Although the subject matter of Little Shop of Horrors is a little dark, what with man eating plants from out of space and world domination, the comedy timing and non-stop soundtrack makes it a must see show. You really feel the energy of the cast throughout the entire auditorium, what a great start to the New Wolsey’s Autumn season.
