2nd Suffolk Pride Event – Christchurch Park, Ipswich – 21st June, 2010
| |
Clare Summerskill opens Pride 2010
 |
After a cloudy start to the day, an estimated 5,000 people turned up at Christchurch Park in the centre of Ipswich to celebrate the second Suffolk Pride Festival, an increase of up to 70% on last year's attendance.
Organised by local LGBT groups, the event was opened by International lesbian comedienne and writer Clare Summerskill, who also performed a couple of numbers. Further entertainment on stage followed including performances by the cast of "Rent" which will feature in the forthcoming season at the town's New Wolsey Theatre. Party and covers band Frisky entertained the crowds along with drag artistes "Killer Queens", Xtreme, Kenelis, Lucy Atkins and the Devine Miss Lush. The eclectic mix kept the crowds entertained until 7.45pm.
“Pride has truly become a major event in Suffolk’s calendar and it was amazing how everything came together at the last moment to create a wonderful experience for all concerned,” commented Media & Engagement Manager Paul Couch.
He continued: “The atmosphere was incredible; people from the LGBT community interacted with people of all ages, including young families and, as far as I’m aware, the whole event was trouble-free – a perfect example of what we can achieve when everyone works together.”
In addition there was impromptu performances around the park of comical ballet, juggling and stilt walkers.
“Naturally, we’re still in the very early days of Suffolk Pride and there’s always a process of learning going on,” said Paul Couch. “There might be a few changes to Suffolk Pride 2011, but you can bet it’s going to be even bigger and better than this year!”
