Ten years ago
sports supplements were used almost exclusively by bodybuilders
and power lifters. These days, nutritional sports supplements
are used by a wide group of people, who are involved In
a diverse range of sports. One of the growing areas I’ve
been involved in over the last few years is sponsorship
of local athletes and sports people. While several of them
are bodybuilders and strength athletes, others are
cyclists, runners, martial artists, and more recently, motor
cross and horse riders.
While it wouldn’t necessarily be obvious what
benefit participants in these particular sports could derive
from the use of supplements, there are indeed benefits
to be had. Perhaps I am lucky (or maybe intuitive)
but several of the athletes who I sponsor and help
with supply of sports nutrition, compete at an impressively
high level. In fact three of them are world champions several
times over! One came runner up to Lewis Hamilton in the
regional heats of the BBC sports personality of the year
award 2007, one recently received a MBE for services to
sports, another recently competed in a 24 hour endurance
mountain bike event (Mountain Mayhem 2009), coming
13th out of 295 in the 4-man team sports category and then
followed it up a couple of weekends later by coming 3rd
in the “Are You Tough Enough event” an
XC Enduro, known to be the most technical and physically
demanding course in the south of England.
One woman is starting to enjoy even more success competing
at horse dressage, now that she has found the right combination
of supplements to keep her weight; muscle tone; strength
and endurance at the right level. While they
all undoubtedly have natural talent, I’m sure all
of them would agree that the right nutrition played
a part in the success achieved within their chosen sport.
In bodybuilding, the correct nutrition is absolutely essential,
but it also gives one a big ‘edge’ in almost
every other sport (darts and mud wrestling being perhaps
the exception!) Over the next few months I will be taking
a look at the supplements many of my sponsored athletes
use, the benefits they get from using them, and then writing
