Athletics Health Boost for Youngsters

Young people looking for something new to try are invited to take part in outdoor athletics training to enjoy a variety of different sports and learn new skills.

Coastal AC meet fortnightly on Mondays at Farlingaye High School in Woodbridge from 4.30pm to 6pm, meeting on the grass athletics track. Young people aged between eight and 13 can join the club with each session costing £2.

“With longer, lighter evenings young people may be looking for things to do and this is a great opportunity to get expert coaching on a variety of track and field events finding the right sport for them,” said Andy Wright, Head of Community and Economic Services.

The coaching sessions will help young people to try a range of track and field events, including a mixture of running, jumping and throwing disciplines each session. Activities will vary each week, so that young people have the opportunity to learn new events.

“Coastal AC has been running for over a year now and has gone from strength to strength attracting new young people and helping them get expert coaching in sports they might not otherwise get the opportunity to take part in.

“The club relies on support from volunteers and always welcomes additional help. There are also opportunities for volunteers to improve their skills and gain qualifications in coaching so this could also be a chance to develop hobbies and interests into further career opportunities.

“With the Olympics just over a year away this is the perfect time for young people to find out their sporting strengths and spur a lifelong interest in sport and keeping active. The annual Suffolk Youth Games will also be taking place again in July and this is the perfect chance to get in some early training,” added Mr Wright.
Coastal AC will be providing the official training sessions for athletics events at the annual Suffolk Youth Games with further training starting in May.
