Centre receives donation to improve allotment

The Papworth Trust centre for disabled people in Foundation Street, Ipswich has received a donation of £2,000 from rural watchdog charity, the CLA Charitable Trust.

The generous gift will be used to improve accessibility for disabled people at the charity’s allotment at Back Hamlet in the Ipswich docks. Specifically it will be used to build a composting toilet with wheelchair accessibility, providing a convenient and environmentally friendly way of biologically converting waste at the site.

The gardening group works with support workers and volunteers to grow fresh vegetables and learn horticulture, gardening and other skills such as counting, communication and teamwork. The allotment also creates an opportunity for disabled people to mix with the wider community and exercise in the fresh air. The charity hopes to have the toilet built and ready for use before the summer of 2012.

Papworth Trust Centre Manager Mandy Schlarb said, “This funding will make a huge difference and we are very grateful. It means that our allotment will accessible to more people, and that our keen gardeners can spend more time at the site.”
