A mini school fete, complete with a six-lane Scalextric set, tuck shop, giant Connect 4 and a Buzz Wire game will take place in the Tower Ramparts Shopping Centre this Saturday, 3 March 2012 from 10.00am to 3.00pm on the upper level opposite Supercuts. This one-day-only return to the carefree days of your childhood will raise funds to help support the charity Childline; the UK’s free 24-hour helpline for children in danger or distress, who often have nowhere else to turn.
The idea is the brainchild of Centre Manager, Mike Sorhaindo and local radio station Heart FM. Mike commented, “We’re making available one of our shop units to set up a school fete with bunting, flags and old-fashioned attractions,” he continued, “The reason for doing so it to help raise money for this years Have A Heart appeal, which is raising funds to help Childline.”
Gary Stevens, Event Co-ordinator for Heart FM added, “The theme of our appeal this year is ‘Be a kid for a kid’ so we’re hoping that the return to some of the great retro games will be a treat for adults visiting the shopping centre and lots of fun for children seeing these for perhaps the first time.”
Ipswich-born presenter Rob Chandler, one half of the popular Rob & Chrissie Heart Breakfast Show and the pitch-side announcer at Portman Road, will serve pick ‘n mix, fruit salad and sherbet dabs to peckish racers. Rob commented, “I’m really looking forward in taking part in the event, particulary the Scalextric – I’m worried they’re going to have trouble getting me off of it!”
The novel fundraiser is being supported by Lancaster Toyota, Ipswich. General Manager Andy Trott said, “There’s a natural connection between Scalextric and a car dealership so we couldn’t’ resist the opportunity to be involved. We’re delighted to be supporting this event and wish the organisers every success in raising lots of money for such an worthy cause.”
The event heralds the start of a week of auctions and events for the Have a Heart Appeal which includes the chance to bid for a Teddy Bear’s Picnic in Thetford Forest with Will Young as well as the chance to meet Westlife in Dublin on the last night of their farewell tour.
