Earlier this year Management at the Spa Pavilion Theatre were not sure there would even be a Summer Youth Project in 2012 but with the venue continuing to operate under the current operator until January 2013 they are pleased that they can now celebrate their tenth anniversary year with “The Wedding Singer” a musical with music by Matthew Sklar, lyrics by Chad Beguelin, and a book by Beguelin and Tim Herlihy.
The Spa Pavilion Summer Youth Project provides budding young stars in the local area aged between 9 and 23 the chance to work with a professional director, musical director and choreographer to stage and perform a full-scale musical.
Over a two week period the cast are put through an intensive rehearsal schedule, learning all stage techniques including performance, lighting, sound and music. In the second week the show is performed to the paying public in full costume.
The Wedding Singer is set in the ’80s. Robbie Hart lives in his grandmother’s basement in New Jersey and sings in a wedding band. His dreams of being a singer/songwriter are long gone, replaced now by a burning desire to find the right girl and settle down. When his fiancée leaves him standing at the altar, he becomes a wedding planner’s worst nightmare, taking out his bitterness on stage until his eye and heart turn to a new friend, Julia, but she’s engaged to a wealthy Wall Street broker. With a great musical score this really is a fun show and definitely one not to miss. This could be our last production so definitely worth a look if you haven’t seen a Summer Youth Production before.
