New director at UCS

Stuart Bannerman has joined University Campus Suffolk (UCS) as Director of International. Reporting directly to the Provost, he has been seconded to UCS from the University of Essex for two years.

In his role, Stuart will take responsibility for the advancement of the international agenda at UCS, working closely with other Directors and the Heads of School to deliver UCS’s aims in regard to internationalisation of the curriculum, distance learning and student recruitment. This will include raising the profile of activities and developing new initiatives and partnerships.

As an ‘intrapreneur’ Stuart has been responsible for ground breaking operations and academic product. Having taught at the universities of St Andrews and Glasgow, he launched the first International Study Centre at Queen Margaret University in 1998 introducing Graduate Diplomas for the first time as a pre-masters award for international students. He was Head of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) and Director of the Centre for Applied Language Studies at the University of Dundee where he worked on the Wanli Group project in Ningbo, a key player in the education sector in China.

Having set up and run the highly successful International Academy at the University of Essex, Stuart Bannerman now has a new challenge at partner institution UCS.

He said: “This is a very exciting opportunity. UCS has developed rapidly over the past five years and is looking closely at how it can internationalise and move into new markets and I am pleased to be playing a leading role in this. UCS offers some very interesting courses, covering in demand areas such as fashion, bioscience and business, which are sure to have a wide appeal, and is more accessible than traditional universities.”
