Half Term: Railway relives history

The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway is bringing back an event it hasn’t held for over ten years this October half term. The Corn and Coal event will be held on October 28th and November 4th, the Sundays at either end of the school break.

The event features various items of historical farm machinery and will show how farming and the railways worked hand-in-hand during the early 20th century. The event was last run in 2000 before the Middy started running trains, so this time there will be added attraction of rides on the demonstration line in addition to the traditional farming displays.

The line’s current resident loco ‘Wissington’ will be in familiar surroundings, having worked it’s entire life on an agricultural railway at the Wissington Sugar factory in Norfolk.

Both days will run from 11am to 4.30pm with trains approximately every 20 minutes from 11.20am. Tickets are £6 adult, £3 child, £4.50 concessions and £15.00 family. Current MSLR season tickets are also valid for this event.

The Corn and Coal event is also the last opportunity to visit the MSLR this year before the ever-popular Santa Specials.

The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway’s Santa Special trains are the perfect way to let children feel a little bit of that Christmas magic a few weeks early.

A trip on The Mid-Suffolk Light railway demonstration line is followed by a visit to Santa in his railway home, where every child receives their own present from Santa. When everyone has visited the train takes you back up to Brockford where refreshments and an entertainer await. There’s even a bit of time to look at the engine as well! Places are limited so book soon to avoid disappointment.

• To book your place on the Santa Special at Mid- Suffolk Light Railway either visit the website at www.mslr.org.uk or telephone 01473 890622.
The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway can be found at Brockford Station, Wetheringsett.
