Warning to Bait Diggers

Bait diggers who flout a voluntary code may cause the introduction of a bye-law to limit damage to mudflats at Ipswich’s Orwell Country Park and at Stutton on the Stour, conservationists warned today.

lugwormThe voluntary code of conduct came in three years ago to establish seasonal limits to bait diggers by closing the mudflats between November and April each year but some bait-diggers have ignored the voluntary ban. And, say officers from the Stour & Orwell Estuary Management Group, the diggers have been aggressive and abusive when challenged by the public.“This might lead to a bye-law to protect the estuary’s wildlife,” said a spokesman.

Ipswich Borough Council is represented on the estuary management group.
