The New Wolsey Theatre are welcoming back The Romany Theatre Company with their production of OUR BIG LAND. After a successful trial performance in January 2013, they now return a year later with the final finished piece to be performed on Thursday 13th February to Saturday 15th February at the New Wolsey Studio in Ipswich.
Oceania, a powerful Gypsy matriarch is convinced that Sophie, an outsider, is destined to become the next keeper of the bauro diklo, the sacred storytelling shawl. The bauro diklo is the lifeblood of Romany people. When Sophie falls in love with Oceania’s handsome but brutal son Roman, Oceania is overjoyed. But a catastrophic event on Sophie and Roman’s wedding day threatens not only to tear apart Oceana’s plan, and family, but the whole future of the Romany people.
With a growing reputation for creating rich, powerful and challenging drama that is bold and exciting while always entertaining, the Romany Theatre Company’s forthcoming new play with songs, OUR BIG LAND, explores the 2000 year history of Romany Gypsies through one woman’s very personal story.
The first play by a Romany Traveller writer to be presented in the UK with original Gypsy music and songs. Our Big Land has a poetic beauty mixed with gritty realism. A play about family bonds, cultural loyalty and the battle between head and heart.
