After a two year break since their last UK concert tour, the legendary 10cc are back on the road this autumn with a 23-date headline tour including Ipswich Regent on Monday 13th October.
Fronted by 10cc co-founder Graham Gouldman, the current live line-up has been together for over a decade, with Gouldman recently inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in America, joining legends such as Burt Bacharach, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney.
Purveyors of some of the greatest pop records of the 20th century, 10cc were one of the most inventive and influential bands in the history of popular music, achieving commercial, critical and creative success in equal measure, selling more than 15 million albums in the UK and 30 million worldwide.
With 11 Top 10 singles in the UK, the band earned critical respect and public acclaim for tracks such as their three No 1s – Rubber Bullets, I’m Not In Love and Dreadlock Holiday, along with Donna, Wall Street Shuffle, The Dean and I and The Things We Do For Love.
Further hits included Art For Art’s Sake and Good Morning Judge, I’m Mandy Fly Me and Life Is A Minestrone.
Before forming 10cc, Gouldman = then in his late-teens – wrote a string of million-selling hits for other artistes, including For Your Love and Heart Full Of Soul (for The Yardbirds), Bust Stop and Look Through Any Window (The Hollies), No Milk Today (Herman’s Hermits), Pamela Pamela (Wayne Fontana) and Tallyman, for Jeff Beck.
10cc comprises Gouldman (bass, guitars, vocals), Rick Fenn (lead guitar, vocals), Paul Burgess (drums, percussion), Mick Wilson (vocals, percussion, guitar, keyboards) and Mike Stevens (keyboards, guitar, sax, vocals). Rick and Paul have both worked with 10cc since the mid-‘70s.
“Year on year we get busier and visit more countries. It’s great, we love touring and playing together and we get on really well,” says Gouldman. “The audiences these days are very gratifying. You get the people you would expect, who grew up with 10cc, but you also get young kids who know the songs too.”
Testament to 10cc’s ongoing appeal, the band can count a generation-straddling array of fellow artists among their many millions of fans, everyone from Chrissie Hynde to The Feeling’s Dan Gillespie and Axl Rose to Sophie Ellis Bextor. And now a new generation is discovering 10cc for the very first time.
With the summer comprising festival dates across Europe, an appearances at British Summer Time in Hyde Park (13 July) and further headline shows to be announced for 2015 – including a return to the Royal Albert Hall – the music of 10cc is reaching ever larger and wider audiences.
“The band, as it stands now is absolutely fantastic. And of course our main strength and what we’re selling is the songs, nothing else,” says Gouldman, “This is as near as you’re ever going to get to hearing the perfect 10cc. Hit after hit after hit. It’s relentless. We show no mercy.”
