After a sell-out performance of The Black Album in April, Avant Garde Dance returns to the Jerwood DanceHouse with a five day summer school that aims to inspire and empower young people through dance. This residency will give participants a chance to learn, be creative and perform, whilst offering students a unique opportunity to work closely with professional dance artists on creative, choreographic tasks and set movement phrases, building towards an informal sharing at the end of the week.

The week will consist of daily repertoire sessions, opportunities for participants to explore their own movement style, technique classes in a range of styles. Plus choreographic and musicality tasks which encourage and nurture an open mind and creative approach when working within the studio environment.

Under the artistic direction of Tony Adigun, Avant Garde Dance is a London based company at the forefront of innovative hip hop contemporary dance theatre. Its mantra ‘Innovative Never Replicate’ is evident throughout an extensive portfolio of work: dynamic performances that have musicality at their core and explore a myriad of styles, themes and media.

Following on from the magical Once Upon A Time exhibition at Ipswich Museum which highlighted the work of local illustrators, DanceEast Core Tutor Sarah Franklin will lead a series of creative dance workshops suitable for 4-7 year olds which explore the themes of imagination and story-telling based on the images of local illustrators Michael Foreman and Helen Oxenbury.

Week One will celebrate the work of Lowestoft-born Foreman, two-time winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal for British children’s book illustration. Workshops will draw inspiration from his artwork for The World of Fairytales, Dolphin Boy, The Day the Sea, Pirates Ahoy and Beowulf.

Multiple award-winning illustrator Oxenbury is the source of inspiration for workshops taking place in week two, with sessions themed around the Ipswich-born artist’s work in publications Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig, and We’re Going On A Bear Hunt.
