Melton Remembers

Local organisations including the new Melton WI, Melton Old Church Society, Melton Primary School and St Andrew’s Church have been working together with Parish Councillors to commemorate Melton’s involvement in WW1.

The next event, Let’s Build an Archive”, takes place on Saturday 15th November, from 10am until 3pm, at the Burness Parish Rooms, The Street, Melton IP12 1PW. Visitors of all ages are invited to come and meet the team, bring along WW1 family heirlooms, share wartime stories and enjoy music of the period presented live by Melton Folk. The day will feature a display of local archives. Special WW1 themed craft activities are planned to interest younger visitors.

The day will provide an opportunity for visitors to find out more about the rare and unusually large collection of WW1 grave markers on permanent display at Melton Old Church.

Activities to date have resulted in the putting together the beginnings of a Roll of Honour listing names of all known to have served with connections to Melton. The group is keen to build on the information published in the local booklet “Behind the Name” (2009) and further explore the lives of local people. Organisers hope to gather a collection of images, documents and other memorabilia.

Homemade refreshments will be available, free admission.
