Christmas Tree Festival

Ipswich town centre church St Mary-le-Tower is getting ready for its annual Grand Christmas Tree Festival at the beginning of December. The church in Tower Street will run the festival from 3rd until 10th December and is inviting local charities, community groups and businesses to take part.

This year, in addition to raising funds for the church, the festival will support two other charities: Ipswich Winter Night Shelter project, and The Alzheimer’s Society.

Participants decorate their own trees on a theme of their own choice and the church encourages everyone to be creative and entertaining. Last year there were over 70 decorated trees and this year the church hopes for even more.

Admission to the church to view this fabulous festival is free and open to all. There is also a fantastic programme of special events for which tickets will be available in November. A festival café will run in the day times, and a bar in the evenings for the special events:

Wednesday 3rd December
Opening Celebration – for everyone involved with the festival and their guests, with bar and refreshments, 7pm

Thursday 4th December
Late night opening (open to all) – for those who would like to take a break from their late night Christmas shopping, 6 – 9pm

Friday 5th December
A Professional Book Reading – local actor Ed Max reads a well known book. “You’re never too old to be read to!”

Saturday 6th December
‘This Joint is Jumpin’ – John Petters and his band returns to delight Jazz fans with an evening of Fats Waller music, 7.30pm

Sunday 7th December
‘Songs of Praise among the trees’ following the acclaimed BBC format, accompanied by an ensemble from the Ipswich Hospital Band, 6.30pm

Canon Charles Jenkin, Vicar, says, “The festival is a wonderful celebration of community as well as being a great deal of fun and promoting the true spirit of Christmas. It helps to put St Mary-le-Tower church on the map and we really enjoy welcoming the several thousand people who visit each year.”
