The Head Chef at the Suffolk Food Hall’s Cookhouse restaurant will be swapping his chef’s whites for lycra in a 1000 mile cycling challenge. Stephen Robson will be cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats in just 12 days and all for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).
Hadleigh resident Stephen Robson has smashed his £2600 target reaching nearly £4000. Stephen’s cycling challenge takes place on 4th May taking him through the winding Cornish roads along the seafront to Scotland’s most northerly point.
After visiting the Tree House project in Ipswich Stephen felt compelled to support EACH through fundraising and pushing himself to his own physical limits. “When I saw the work of the staff and the excellent facilities I knew it was EACH I wanted to support.”
To support Stephen in his epic test of physical endurance, the Suffolk Food Hall just under the Orwell Bridge in Ipswich has been hosting various events including the blender bike which uses pedal power to make your own smoothies, staff donating their tips in the restaurant and a popular quiz night.
Through strength and endurance training Stephen is preparing for this challenge supported by his colleagues and local cycling club. He is also preparing his food intake carefully by making his own nutritional snacks.
Stephen explains why he just can’t resist making his own fuel: “Branded energy bars and gels are very expensive to buy, are heavily processed and often full of sugar. I decided to start making my own alternatives including rice cakes and a savoury flapjack; the guys who I cycle with are always putting special requests in!”
Staff at the local food and drink destination have designed a Suffolk Food Hall branded jersey with polka dots, farm yard animals and the EACH logo, to spur Stephen on and keep moral up with the appropriate slogan ‘fuelled by the Suffolk Food Hall’.
Stephen recognised the support from his co-workers: “The jerseys look great and are really popular with an increasing number of staff now cycling to work. We are planning lots of after work cycle rides and have entered in to the Ipswich Crafted Classique sportive in August.” Stephen is a member of Hadleigh cycling club who have been proudly supporting the Suffolk’s Year of Cycling and the Suffolk Roadsafe campaign. Hadleigh Cycling Club is also launching their inaugural annual sportive, The Gayford Flyer, as part of their Hadleigh Cycling Festival line up. The Hadleigh Club and Suffolk Food Hall team enjoy trying out Stevie’s new recipes.
