Brass on the Grass

For over 12 years the Friends of Christchurch Park have brought the summer tradition of free Sunday afternoon band concerts to Christchurch Park.

The concerts are held on the beautiful Upper Arboretum lawn at the Park’s ‘bandstand’, the Arts and Crafts shelter, near the Henley Road entrance.   Everyone is welcome to come along, maybe to enjoy a picnic, have a ride on the Parkmobile, or just laze in the sun, and enjoy listening to the varied and high quality bands we have brought from Ipswich and beyond.

The regular Brass on the Grass series of four concerts begins on the 19th July with a return visit of the highly enjoyable Ipswich Community Wind Band.  On the following Sunday, 26th July, organisers welcome the Stowmarket Concert Band.  Despite their name this is a traditional brass band.  This is their first visit so let’s give them a warm welcome.  In August there will be the fabulous Colchester Band (2nd August) who last year gave a marvellous selection of music including some virtuoso solos as well as tunes from Daft Punk.  On the 9th of August the spectacular Ipswich Hospital Band will be back (hopefully without tropical storm ex Bertha) to release all that frustration from last year’s cancellation by making some great sounds.

All concerts are free and start at 2.30pm.

The Friends of Christchurch Park thank the individuals and companies that sponsor Brass on Grass; sponsors provide the only funds to keep this summer tradition going.  This year the sponsors are The Greyhound pub, Coes of Ipswich, Scrutton Bland, and a generous friend of the park.
