Children in Need get help from Tony and choir

Suffolk and Essex’s award-winning community choir Funky Voices, turned out in force at one of the worlds most legendary recording studios to record a BBC Children in Need single with Spandau Ballet front man and 80’s legend Tony Hadley.

Over 300 members from the modern community choir recorded “Through the Barricades” with Spandau Ballet front man, Tony Hadley for Children in Need on Sunday 13th November at the BBC’s Maida Vale studios, London. After speaking with Spandau Ballet and BBC Children in Need, Tony Hadley came forward and not only offered his full support towards the project, but also his iconic voice to the recording itself.

As soon as Tony walked through the studio doors to meet the choir, he was greeted with an eruption of applause from the singers which gave the start to a very emotional day. Throughout the recording, the atmosphere was electric. The choir sang their hearts out as Tony joined them for the emotional crescendo of the song, with his instantly recognizable solo voice. Tony said “the arrangement that Sandra (Musical Director of Funky Voices) has created is fantastic and the choir sound a million dollars”. Pudsey Bear shared the stage for the recording, with singers donning their Pudsey ears and t-shirts. Pudsey gave it the big thumbs up!

Sandra Colston (Musical Director of Funky Voices) said, “the choir and the team involved have worked so hard and to say I’m proud is an understatement. It was an absolute pleasure to work with Tony on this project and hope that we can raise lots of money for BBC Children in Need.”

This spine-tingling, heart-felt arrangement of Funky Voices with Tony Hadley singing ‘Through the Barricades’, now in its 30th anniversary, will be available to download on iTunes on Friday 18th November, the day of the official BBC Children in Need TV appeal.
