Stowmarket’s Spring Musical Comedy
Written by Ipswich24, 20/04/2017
Tickets are on sale for SODS’ sparkling spring musical comedy, ‘Mame’, which will run at Stowmarket’s Regal Theatre from Wednesday 10 – Sunday 13 May at 7.30pm plus a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Written by Simon Jerome Lawrence & Robert E. Lee, with music & lyrics by Jerry Herman, this is a show packed with marvellous music, delightful dance and crackling comedy.
Mame Dennis is glamorous, well-to-do and lives a carefree life of pleasure in New York at the peak of the 1920s. Out of the blue she is surprised by a ‘wonderful present’ – her ten year old orphan nephew, named Patrick. Being needed is something new for Mame and it completely changes her life!
As a free spirit, Mame is determined to prevent Patrick becoming a conformist prisoner of the Establishment and so introduces him to her free-wheeling lifestyle. However, when she loses her fortune in the Wall Street Crash of 1929, Mame faces destitution and has to try working for a living – with some hilarious and unexpected results!
The show was a long running hit both on New York’s Broadway and in London’s West End, having starred Angela Lansbury, Lucille Ball, Ginger Rogers and Juliet Prowse in the title role. Stowmarket Operatic & Dramatic Society’s productions frequently enjoy sell-out success so book your tickets early to avoid disappointment.
