Ipswich children name port terminal

An official naming ceremony has been held to celebrate the opening of a new bulk warehouse terminal at the Port of Ipswich worth £2.2 million. The new terminal, which will provide state-of-the-art facilities to ABP customers, has been opened by Ben Gummer MP at the Port of Ipswich.

Named the Cliff Bulk Terminal, it replaces the former warehouses numbered ‘2’ and ‘17’ on the Cliff Quay complex. Together with the Orwell Bulk Terminal, which opened in 2015, the new facility will increase the warehouse space available at the port by more than 10%. This project is part of ABP’s ongoing warehouse investment programme and was built by the company 3B Construction.

ABP invited local school children at Cliff Lane Primary School to participate in choosing a name for the new terminal. A naming competition was held which attracted an incredible 155 entries and runner-up names included Cliff Central, Landseer Storage Terminal and ABP Ipswich Pride. The winning entry of Cliff Bulk Terminal was chosen as it reflects both the location of the new facility on Cliff Quay and its association with Cliff Lane Primary School.

Nicola Simmonds, Teacher at Cliff Lane Primary School, said: “Being part of this naming competition has inspired many of the children from our school to find out more about the workings of the Port of Ipswich.

“The competition has encouraged pupils to think more deeply about the port and the wide variety of goods that are handled there. As a result the port is no longer a place of mystery for the children, but a place to visit and even aspire to work one day.”

During the opening ceremony, Ben Gummer, MP for Ipswich, was also joined by Roger Fern, Mayor of Ipswich, ABP customers and staff.
