The Museum of East Anglian Life holds it’s annual Bonfire Night on Saturday 3rd November and a very special guest will be in attendance.
The Empress of Britain, the museum’s iconic and much-loved steam engine, was taken away back in 2017 after failing her boiler inspection. The museum obtained a grant of £16,500 from the Association of Industrial Archaeology towards restoration, but needed to raise additional funds to complete the extensive work needed to restore the Empress back to her former glory. Alongside some public fundraising, the museum was able to find the additional funding needed thanks to the generosity of local district Councillors who donated £4000 towards the Empress restoration.
On Saturday 3 November, visitors to the Bonfire Night Celebrations will be able to see the Empress in steam, this comes after an official unveiling to local Councillors and funders at last weekend’s Cider and Song event.
Councillor Lesley Mayes, explains ‘I am delighted that we can welcome back to the Museum the Empress of Britain and I am sure that I speak on behalf of many residents of Stowmarket and beyond who have missed seeing the Empress whilst repairs have been carried out.’
The popular Bonfire Night event features a spectacular fireworks display, roaring bonfire, as well as amusements. Conveniently located in the centre of Stowmarket, within the Museum’s stunning 75 acre site.
Gates are open from 6.00pm giving you the chance to enjoy the selection of Amusements and the Empress in steam, before the main event. Food and refreshments, including a bar will be available to buy throughout the evening.
Visitors can keep toasty by the bonfire, which is lit on the top field at 7pm before the fireworks begin at 7.30pm, a brilliant display that’s guaranteed to wow all the family, as we decorate the skies with light and colour.
