Slam dunk for youth charity after funding boost

A Suffolk youth support charity is celebrating after receiving a £5000 grant meaning it can offer 750 free places at sports sessions for young people across Ipswich.

Inspire Suffolk was awarded the funding from financial services company, OneFamily, as part of its Foundation Community Grants.

The charity is putting the money towards its ‘Turn Up & Play’ sport sessions, an initiative that offers free sports sessions to children aged five to 16, including football, basketball, boxing and badminton in Ipswich. The scheme was launched to help young people stay active, make friends, and develop key social skills without the barrier of cost.

The charity supports young people across Suffolk and North Essex, to help them to overcome personal challenges and make positive choices in their lives, including its Turn Up & Play sessions to boost self-confidence.

OneFamily customer Andrew Sparks nominated Inspire Suffolk for the grant after his nephew lost his life to violent crime in the Ipswich area. Andrew hopes the funding will give young people a positive outlet for their energy and help them to find a passion and purpose through sport.

Terry Baxter, Chief Executive of Inspire Suffolk said: “The cost of taking part in sport outside of school can often be a real barrier to young people.

“We know from our free sports sessions that the majority of those taking part would have been doing nothing otherwise, which stresses just how important they are. We hope that the funding from One Family will encourage even more children to get involved and focus on the positive impact of sport, which in turn keeps them off the streets.

“We are so grateful to Andrew for nominating us for the Community Grant following such a tragic incident in the local community to allow us to provide much-needed activity for local children and young people, and thanks to the kind contribution from OneFamily. This will mean that 750 more local people can benefit from these sessions!”

Guy French, corporate and customer strategy director at OneFamily, said: “The work Inspire Suffolk does helps children build their confidence and makes their futures brighter. We’re thrilled that our funding will help to support this great cause and enable even more young people to access free sport sessions in Suffolk.

“Our Community Grants provide support for causes that our customers care about, and over the past three years the OneFamily Foundation has provided essential funding to more than 200 community projects across the UK.”
