New Look for Felixstowe and Walton U14 Girls Football Team

Felixstowe and Walton U14 girls football team are sporting a smart new look – thanks to a local councillors Enabling Community Budget.

The U14s team, which only started up 4 years ago, has already finished second in their league twice.

The game at their age group goes from 7-a-side to 9-a-side and the team has grown to attract new players, making it possible they could go for a full 11-a-side team next season.

The core of the team live and go to school in Felixstowe but recently, there have been new additions from other schools, bringing parents and siblings together.

Previously, the girls had to play in miss-matched kit and had few resources for training, until local Suffolk Coastal Councillor, Steve Gallant, stepped in to help using money from his Enabling Communities Budget.

“The team has never had any sponsorship and have raised money for kits by packing shopping at Morrisons, holding race nights and raffles at the club,” explained Steve.

“Being part of this team, gives the girls a good sense of community, representing their club and town in weekly matches is important to them and engages them with the rest of the club.”

“The club has several girls teams and they are looked up to by the younger players. They train every Friday and work hard to keep their fitness levels up. Hopefully, this boost will help bring this team even closer and boost their confidence and self belief, benefiting the club as a whole.”

Steve provided £800 to buy the girls a full kit, as well as waterproof windcheaters for training.

Each elected member of Suffolk Coastal District Council has £6,500 to spend a year on new community projects or to develop projects in their ward, as they see appropriate.
Since the launch of the scheme in December 2013 just over £850,000 has been spent supporting some 600 projects across on a wide range of new community initiatives.
