Review: Little Match Girl

The Christmas offering from DanceEast this year is the Little Match Girl. Directed and choreographed by Arthur Pita, this show is truly magical.

Fiammetta is desperately trying to sell her matches hoping to earn enough money for a much needed meal. It’s a freezing cold Christmas Eve and she encounters many characters on her journey and not everyone she meets are good. Eventually she is left cold and hungry, with just a few matches left to keep herself warm. As the cold of the winters night takes hold Fiammetta’s much-loved grandmother’s spirit appears and takes the Little Match Girl to the moon.

This production is truly wonderful. The enchanting music, clever choreography and beautiful dance takes you on a journey of fantasy that is just perfect for a Christmas show. The Little Match Girl has just the right amount of humor to prevent the tale from becoming too dark. And the added sprinkling of snow really sets the scene well.

The talented cast told the story extremely well, keeping even the youngest audience member enthralled in the performance.

This really is one show that you do not want to miss this Christmas, perfectly pitched to bring lots of festive magic, along with the odd little surprise, The Little Match Girl gets a big thumbs up from us at Ipswich24.

The Little Match Girls is on at Jerwood DanceHouse, Dance East until Christmas Eve. To book tickets contact the Box Office on 01473 295230.
