Review: Sleeping Beauty, Mercury Theatre

Sleeping Beauty is the panto of choice for the Mercury Theatre this year bringing a little bit of fairy magic to Colchester.

sleeping-mercuryEveryone knows this well told tale of a baby princess that is cursed by an old woman, before she reaches her sixteenth birthday she will pick her finger and die… The baby’s fairy god mother is unable to stop the powerful spell, however she does mange to change to curse, meaning that the princess will instead sleep for a hundred years, and a kiss from a handsome prince will awaken her.

The Mercury Theatre have added their own stamp on story creating their own magical adventure. With a Disney style set, a very strong cast and great musical numbers this production of Sleeping Beauty strays a little from the original tale, however the show works wonderfully well.

A trainee fairy, a trip to the future, a time shifting song and the odd puppet are all packed into this two-hour show, which the audience thoroughly enjoyed.

Sleeping Beauty in on at the Mercury Theatre until Saturday 11th January and is well worth a trip up the A12 for. To book tickets contact the Box Office on 01206 573948 or visit www.mercurytheatre.co.uk
