Review: The Da Vinci Code
It’s hard to imagine how Dan Brown’s book full of intrigue, mystery, and fast paced action could work on the stage, but the latest production at The Mercury Theatre Colchester of The Da Vinci Code proves that it really does…
After a murder victim’s body is found in the Louvre Museum, covered in strange symbols, professor Robert Langdon is called to help investigate the crime. Little does he know that police believe that he is in fact the killer.
Langdon and the murder victim’s granddaughter, and cryptologist Sophie Neveu head on a quest to solve the hidden clues in an action filled journey across Europe to, not only prove Langdon’s innocence, but to unravel the secrets of history before they fall into the wrong hands.
The action is brought to life with the most ingenious set, taking the audience from location to location with ease. The whole production is very atmospheric and the action really is ‘edge of the seat’ stuff. The use of the screen to help highlight the clues is very clever and makes you feel even more part of the action.
Joe Bannister makes for a convincing Robert Langdon, complete with Mickey Mouse watch and his on-stage relationship with Georgia-Mae Myres, who is perfectly cast as Sophie Neveu, is just brilliant.
In fact, all of the cast are very strong, however a special mention to Joe Pitts as Silas, who’s performance in this production is outstanding.
On paper, The Da Vinci Code on the stage shouldn’t work. However, with a combination of Dan Brown’s brilliant storytelling, the amazing acting from the cast and the brilliant staging that this production brings, it doesn’t just work, it’s incredible!
The Da Vinci Code at the Mercury Theatre is quite possibly the best thing on stage in the area at the moment and is definitely a ‘must see’ this Spring.
