Review: Beauty and the Beast – New Wolsey
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the New Wolsey Theatre’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Panto, and with a cast of very talented actor-musicians bringing Beauty and the Beast to the stage this Christmas season, this show really is a festive gift.
The prince upsets the evil Snarliana by not allowing her to use his loo… Angered by his selfishness, she puts a curse on him, turning him into a beast and hiding his castle and the staff within its walls from the folk of Ipswich. The only way to break the curse is for someone to fall in love with him and his new disfigured looks.
Fast forward a few years, and Belle and her feathered friend, Pigeon, are intrigued by a centuries-old locked door that’s been in the town for as long as anyone can remember. The pair, whilst recording their new podcast – Ipswich Mysteries, manage to gain access through the door and stumble upon the Beast and his talking statues. Pigeon is hungry and starts munching on the Beast’s prize roses. Annoyed at the act, he threatens the bird with death; however, Belle steps in and asks to swap places with her friend. The Beast agrees and keeps Belle prisoner in the hidden castle.
As always, the Wolsey Rock ‘n’ Roll panto is full of festive fun. From the onset, there are great musical numbers from a very talented cast., with all the panto mayhem you’d expect. A pub-owning dame, Mrs Ringer, brings much humour and some brilliant audience participation, an evil villain to boo and hiss at, and a defecating pigeon…. Yes, that’s right, Pigeon certainly makes an entrance, as the audience members in the front row can testify…!
A strong performance from Nis Raza Hamilton as Belle with fabulous on-stage chemistry with Eloise Richardson as Pigeon. Neil Urquhart, who plays the Beast, has the most incredible vocal range and really belted out some brilliant musical numbers, whilst Max Gallagher brought the laughs as the dame, Mrs Ringer.
Overall, a great show with a very strong cast. But the glue that holds everything together is Signe Larsson as the villain of the piece, Snarlina. Now, I know you’re not supposed to like the villain in panto land, and there were boos and hisses aplenty; however, Larsson is just brilliant. She has the most amazing vocals, can play just about every instrument, and is totally captivating to watch— what a star!
As always, the Wolsey’s festive offering doesn’t disappoint. If it’s family panto fun you’re after this Christmas, then this is the show to give you that seasonal sparkle.
Beauty and the Beast Rock ‘n’ Roll Panto is at the New Wolsey until 17th January 2026. To book tickets, visit www.wolseytheatre.co.uk
