Plug in Suffolk: Revolutionising driving
Whether your car is temporarily off the road, you are planning a weekend escape, or you simply need flexible access to a second vehicle, Plug in Suffolk Car Clubs are aiming to transform the way residents think about travel.
Offering convenience, sustainability, and affordability, this growing initiative is helping communities across the county embrace a cleaner, more flexible way to drive.
Launched in summer 2025, the Plug in Suffolk Car Club is helping increase shared mobility in the county. Ipswich hosts two dedicated sites on Ann Street and Norfolk Road. They provide easy access to modern, fully electric vehicles (EVs). In total, 18 electric cars are available county-wide, with each location offering a pair of vehicles that can be booked by the minute, hour or day, making it a simple and accessible solution for everyday journeys or occasional trips.
It is a simple idea, book a car when you need one, without the costs and responsibilities of ownership. This model is ideal for residents who want access to a vehicle for day trips, family visits, errands, or exploring somewhere new. With bookings starting from just 30 minutes, the service is intentionally designed to fit around your life, whether that’s a quick dash across town, or a longer adventure.
The benefits extend far beyond convenience. Car clubs are proven to contribute positively to the wider community. By reducing the number of privately owned cars on the road, they help ease parking pressures, cut congestion, and support cleaner air. For those curious about electric vehicles, the car club provides an easy way to try out driving an EV without the upfront cost of purchasing one.
Joining the Plug in Suffolk Car Club is simple. Residents can sign up at www.co-wheels.org.uk/join and use the promo code SUFFOLK15 to enjoy free membership plus £15 driving credit on their account. With no monthly fee, members only pay for the time they use the vehicle and the miles they drive. Better still, membership unlocks access to Co Wheels vehicles nationally from Penzance to Orkney, making it a useful option for travel beyond Suffolk.
