News from Sutton Hoo Ship’s Company
This month has very much been about looking ahead. The Sutton Hoo Ship’s Company are beginning the early planning for what they hope will become the next major chapter for the Ship’s Company – the reconstruction of the Snape Ship.
There is much work to be done before this project can become a reality, but the knowledge and practical skills developed through building the Sutton Hoo ship give an extraordinary foundation on which to build. It is exciting to begin exploring how that experience can be carried forward into another important piece of Suffolk’s Anglo-Saxon story.
An important part of the preparations for the Sutton Hoo ship launch is the development of a new exhibition which will be on display in the lead up to the launch. After so many years of research, experimentation, problem-solving and practical shipbuilding, there is an enormous story to tell – not only about the ship itself, but about what has been learned by reconstructing it.
Sadly, as it currently stands, from April 2028, the Ship’s Company will need a new site to establish a National Boat Building Centre, so if you know of any buildings or land in the Woodbridge area that could accommodate an iconic project like this, please get in touch.
Shipmate Scheme
This iconic project simply cannot progress without the continued support of the general public, and there are many ways in which they can help. One way is through the Shipmate Scheme, through which you can help to support the legacy and help SHSC to row towards a future that honours this country’s past, see https://saxonship.org for more information.
