Review: The Grim Tales, Wolsey Studio

If you go down to the woods today you’re sure of a big surprise… And, this certainly is the case with the latest offering from the New Wolsey Youth Theatre.

The Grim Tales brings seven classic stories by the Brothers Grimm, including Hansel & Gretel, Ashputtel, The Lady and The Lion, Rumpelstiltskin and Little Red Cap to the stage, in a dark, mischievous way that is ideally placed for this time of the year, as the nights draw in and our thoughts turn to Halloween.

The talented young cast takes the audience on a journey from one classic tale to the next with ease and expert storytelling, although at times the narrator’s delivery between the stories was a little on the fast side, this does not distract from the action.

Over all, the cast in this production puts in a very commendable performance, with strong delivery and believable performances that would rival any professional production.

The Grim Tales is a brilliant piece of theatre that kept the audience captivated throughout, added to this some great lighting, music and, the very clever use of puppets, makes this production one that you really should see this Autumn. However, you may wish to sleep with the light on afterwards…

The Grim Tales is at the New Wolsey Studio, Ipswich until Saturday 26th October. To book tickets contact the Box Office on 01473 295900.
