Review: Hags – New Wolsey Theatre

Hags is a fun and entertaining production filled with songs, magic tricks and laughter – it also tells a very dark and disturbing tale from Scratchworks Theatre Company.

A true tale of three women from 1682 Bideford who were the last women hanged for being witches.

The trio of female actors start the story with some magic tricks and it all seems quite gentle but between the illusions the story of the three Bideford women unfolds.

Parallels can be drawn between the persecution of the witches in 1682 and with the way that people are still persecuted today. The world is made up of all kinds of people and very often it is easy to point fingers and make comments about people because they are different.

That certainly was the case with the witch hunts that were carried out in England 340 years ago, leading to many innocent women going to the gallows.

Everyone will love this play with its well written script and fun magic tricks, but at the end you will come away both entertained and educated.
