Review: 9 to 5 The Musical
Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 The Musical remains one of the most entertaining and relevant modern musical comedies, and Riverside Musical Theatre Company’s latest production at the Riverside Theatre, Woodbridge, delivers a thoroughly enjoyable evening packed with laughter, energy and heart.
Based on the much-loved 1980 film, the story follows office workers Violet (Samantha De Vita), Judy (Kathryn Kitchener) and Doralee (Jade Tournay-Godfrey) as they take on their sexist, arrogant boss Franklin Hart Jr. (Jonathan Davis). Workplace frustration gradually develops into a hilarious tale of friendship, empowerment and revenge. Thanks to Dolly Parton’s infectious score there’s plenty of toe-tapping musical numbers that mix comedy and social commentary of the time, a period when inequality was very much the norm.
From the opening number, the strong cast throw themselves into the production with enthusiasm and commitment. The three leading ladies form a believable and engaging partnership, each bringing their own personality to the role while creating the chemistry that sits at the heart of the story.
Musically, the production is in safe hands. A live orchestra under the direction of Mike Wren provides a lively accompaniment throughout, maintaining the pace of the show and allowing Parton’s catchy score to shine.
The standout performance for me has to be that of Natasha Stevenson as Roz. She combines powerful vocals with excellent comic timing.
A clever set design allows scene changes to flow smoothly and keeps the action moving, while the costumes effectively evoke the late-1970s setting.
What shows most is the company’s sense of fun. Locally produced theatre thrives when performers are clearly enjoying themselves, and that enjoyment is infectious here. The audience responded warmly throughout, with laughter, applause and appreciation for a hard-working cast.
Riverside Musical Theatre Company has once again demonstrated the depth of local theatrical talent and its ability to tackle a demanding musical with confidence.
Funny, uplifting and packed with memorable songs, 9 to 5 The Musical is both highly entertaining and genuinely engaging. Riverside Musical Theatre Company has delivered another successful production that deserves strong local support.
