Review: The Void
A gripping futuristic Horror packed with mystery, suspense and unexpected twists, The Void at the New Wolsey Theatre keeps its audience guessing right until the very end.
Flint’s mission is to search space listening for the unknown with his AI assistant Nova. A faint mayday comes across his radio and he changes course to investigate. Boarding the trouble ship Flint comes across Blair, the ship’s doctor however the rest to the crew are dead…. And yet there seems to be someone or something onboard the craft!
Set aboard a spaceship in an unsettling future, the production gradually draws you into its mysterious world. As events unfold, questions begin to mount and the tension builds, leaving you trying to piece together exactly what is happening and just who else is on board the craft.
With just two main performers on stage, the acting is particularly impressive. Both deliver strong, convincing performances, creating a real sense of tension and drawing the audience into the unfolding drama. They hold the stage brilliantly, keeping you engaged as the mystery deepens and the atmosphere becomes increasingly strange.
The set is equally impressive, with clever use of a screen showing scenes from elsewhere aboard the spaceship. This adds another dimension to the action, allowing the audience to see what is happening beyond the immediate stage and helping to create a convincing futuristic environment. Combined with brilliant visual effects, the staging is imaginative and atmospheric, adding greatly to the overall experience.
One of the production’s greatest strengths is its ability to keep you guessing. Just when you think you might have worked things out, another twist leaves you questioning everything again. The suspense is so well maintained that the audience is kept on the edge of their seats, and there are several moments that will make you jump!
Overall, The Void is a fabulous production, combining strong acting, a brilliant set and clever effects to deliver a thoroughly entertaining theatrical experience. Atmospheric, intriguing and full of suspense, it is a futuristic thriller that holds your attention throughout, with a final act that brings everything together. A fantastic show that is well worth seeing.
