Discover new Museum in Ipswich

There’s a new museum in the heart of Ipswich, and it’s a little different from your traditional museum.

MOTE – Museum of the Environment is a space for exploring how our world is changing, bringing together art, science, history, ideas and community. Located at 13 Museum Street, MOTE invites visitors to discover environmental stories through exhibitions, displays, events and the people behind them.

Since opening in August, MOTE has welcomed artists, musicians, researchers, community groups and visitors through its doors, with an evolving programme that brings together creativity, science and conversations about the world around us.

Recent exhibitions have explored everything from waste and found materials to biodiversity, microorganisms and our relationship with the natural world. August saw the opening of Jane Stewart’s Re-Form, alongside Zasmina’s Beneath the Surface, while Sue Gascoyne’s work has explored themes of consumption and our relationship with the natural world.

October continued this varied programme, with Planned Obsolescence bringing together artists exploring technology, making, analogue processes and our changing relationship with the objects around us. The month has also included artist demonstrations, talks, performances and the East Anglian Photography Awards, celebrating photography from across the region.

At MOTE, there isn’t one way to experience the museum. You might come to see an exhibition, meet an artist, join a talk or demonstration, explore the building’s history, or simply spend some time discovering something new.

And now, you can stay a little longer.

Arlingtons Café is now open within MOTE, serving food made from scratch using wholesome ingredients, alongside coffee and a changing menu shaped by seasonal produce. It offers another reason to make MOTE part of your day in Ipswich.

As MOTE continues to develop, the programme will keep evolving, with events announced regularly. MOTE encourages visitors to check their website for the latest information on what’s happening.
